100 Days On the Road

Well we have officially been on the road for 100 days!  Well a couple more than that by now.  Our 100th day fell on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and we spent the day sea kayaking around San Juan Island in very windy seas but beautiful sunny weather, searching the horizon for signs of Orcas or other whales or dolphins.  We didn’t see any whales unfortunately, but spotted a number of Bald Eagles, including some mating activity, and had a lovely time exploring the western coast of San Juan Island, and getting a workout in to boot.

So, as we celebrate this milestone of 100 days into this grand adventure, here are some random thoughts from me.

Canyoneering

Canyoneering in Water Canyon, Utah

Canyoneering – what an exhilarating, slightly terrifying way to experience the canyons that make up so much of Utah’s beauty!  When we are given a raving review of a place or activity, we usually take it.  This is what happened when we decided to go canyoneering near Zion National Park in southern Utah.  We’d met a guy on our hike on Hermit Trail at the Grand Canyon (see here for a recap!) and got to chatting with him, and he could not speak more highly of his experience canyoneering in Water Canyon in southern Utah.  So we put it on the list and we are so glad that we did.

The Camper!

Subaru Outback and Treeline Teardrop Camper

We have affectionately named her Magellan, or Gelly for short!

So how did we end up choosing this camper over all the other options – tents, RVs, fifth wheels?  Camping and roadtripping continues to grow in popularity, so there are lots of options to choose from, but when we focused on our budget, our must have features, where we would be traveling and what kind of experience we were looking for, the Treeline Teardrop Camper was the perfect option for us.  Here’s why and how we came to the decision.

Should you take your dog with you on your road trip?

Adventure Dog - Traveling with a Pup on your Roadtrip

If you have ever met us, you know how obsessed we are with our pup.  Our furbaby. Our darling princess queen bee nugget Coconut.  So when we decided to take a long road trip around the Western U.S, we thought well of course we will take Coconut with us!  Well, that’s what I thought.  Ryan was a little more practical and said – maybe we should think about this a little more.  And of course I won out and we took her with us!  But there are some serious things to consider when deciding whether you should bring your dog along with you on your roadtrip.

Coconut was with us for 5 weeks on the road and we absolutely loved having her along for the adventure.  After all, you wouldn’t leave your kids at home for such a grand adventure, so why would we leave our fur-kid at home?!

The Pursuit of a Good Book | The Martian

martian

I’ve just finished The Martian, by Andy Weir.  I’ve started another book club.  It’s an addiction.  I love to read and to talk to my friends and so book clubs are really my jam.  When work permits, of course.  This new book club has only has two members so far – me and one of my smart, funny coworkers who loves the nerdy books that I do.  We are being selective in our membership.  One of the most important factors to consider when contemplating joining or forming a book club is the kinds of books the other members like to read.  One ill-fated book club years ago with a friend (who shall not be named to protect her street cred) chose as the inaugural book Sweet Valley Confidential, which is a sequel ten years after the Sweet Valley High books ended.  And that was the beginning and the very quick end of that book club.  I’m looking for a little bit more substance, a little less silliness.  So we decided to start with The Beak of the Finch and follow it with The Martian.  I’m about halfway through the Beak.  That’s a kinda dry, super factual, interesting but not page-turning book about Darwin and Natural Selection.

The Martian, by Andy Weir, however, I finished in a weekend.  A friend let me borrow it and I devoured it page by page.  It is a story of an astronaut stranded on Mars and his struggle to survive.  I came THISCLOSE about 50 times to flipping to the back to find out what happens to him in the end.

The Pursuit of Delish: Cheesemaking

I love cheese.  If you have met me for 5 minutes, you probably know this about me.  It is my favorite food by far.  Which is sad for the waistline, but hey, we all have our demons.  I run so I can eat cheese.  Another thing you may not know about me (but probably do) is that I like to do things myself – to figure things out.  So when I love a food, I want to learn to make it and then make it my own.  I love macarons with a passion usually reserved for fluffy puppies and squishy babies. And so I learned to make them (recipe to come in a future post!).

And so. I love cheese and decided I would learn how to make it.  And then I talked about it for months and months and never made the time to learn, because that’s pretty standard for my jam-packed, overly scheduled life; a problem that I am working on.  Thankfully I have the most thoughtful husband who listens to my rants about the things I love and the dreams I have and so for our anniversary last year he surprised me with a cheesemaking class!  Making my dreams come true one day at a time, that man. We went to a cooking class at Cavallo Point, a historic hotel tucked just under the Golden Gate Bridge north of San Francisco in Marin, which has the most breathtaking views of the city, is in restored historic buildings of Fort Baker, an old Army post, and also happens to have amazing cooking classes – who knew?!
